Rollmottle’s third full length album on SENTRALL Records represents his most confident work to date. It bears the familiar hallmarks of a Rollmottle production: dreamlike atmospheres, soaring crescendos, chugging guitars, walls of sound and those undeniably thick bottoms. Live instruments and non-synthesized sounds feature prominently and are a direct line to the human hands behind these compositions. A haunting, reverb-drenched piano becomes the emotional voice of the record connecting these songs together in a narrative. Themes of fear and the finite have always underlay Rollmottle’s work. “It’s A Miracle We’re All Still Alive” wryly contemplates the precarity of the present moment in 2019 America, but also links that to the bigger, cosmic question of “How did we even get here?” This record is Rollmottle at his most direct and vulnerable. Despite its dark undercurrents, “It’s A Miracle We’re All Still Alive” offers hope in times of uncertainty.
